Giving back
through Peru's Challenge...
Last month Southern Crossings teamed
up with
Peru's Challenge to deliver some much needed aid to the
devastated community of Lucre.
In the last months several villages in Peru have been damaged by flash
flooding and landslides, leaving thousands of families homeless and
thousands more without crops and livestock. Kati and Macarla from
Southern Crossings teamed up with Brugh, from Peru's
Challenge and spent the day visiting two of these communities.
The day started early. We visited the local markets around town
to gather supplies to be donated to the Municipal guard, for
distribution amongst the people. We filled the van with blankets,
rice, milk, sugar and oil and set off to Lucre. Lucre is a small
town of roughly 300 people. It's main source of income comes from
farming corn and potatoes. While driving into the town you can't
help but notice the streets lined with tents, housing whole families
whose houses have been destroyed by the flooding. We delivered the
donations and set off for a walk through town. We noticed that many
of the houses had been completely destroyed, and were now piles of
rubble beside the road. Of the houses that had survived, it is
obvious that in the coming months many will need to be demolished
because of structural damage. It is estimated that it will take
several years to rebuild Lucre and repair the damage to the economy.
Next stop was
Huacarpay, a small community built around a lake. The people of
Huacarpay were lucky in that they had some warning that the lake
would flood. While more houses were destroyed here the warning meant
that there was more time to salvage possessions and move livestock
to higher ground. We couldn't drive down the main street, as the
whole town is now in the middle of the lake. It is hard to tell just
how badly damaged the city is until the waters go down. It is
obvious though that a lot of hard work lays ahead for the small
community.
If you would like to make a donation, know more about the ongoing projects in the
area, or information on how to help please contact the team at

Making you a part of giving back to
the local communities...
We believe in giving back to the communities we visit,
and we do it in a unique way that we think you'll really like. On a
Southern Crossings trip, you can see this money at work. As a matter
of fact, you can give it yourself! One percent of your trip
price goes to a local children's charity which you may visit on your
trip. So if your trip costs $2000, we'll give $20 of that to
the charity. As a matter of fact, you can even specify where you'd
like that money to go, according to the current needs of the
organization. This way, you're not just passing through,
you're actually making a difference. Our organization in Peru is
Peru's Challenge, just outside of Cuzco. For more info, visit their

Affordable Galapagos!
Made up of
15 main islands and over 100 smaller islands, rocks and islets,
the Galapagos Islands really are a piece of paradise! In
1978 the whole island and area was declared a World Heritage
Site by UNESCO, meaning that the island will be preserved
for future generations. Of course the main attraction of the
islands is the wildlife. Not feared by humans you have the
chance to get up close and personal with seals, iguanas,
birds, turtles and many more species that are not found
anywhere else in the world.
Many people
believe that a trip to the Galapagos costs many thousands of
dollars. Not true! We offer a five-day, four night
cruise, including round-trip flights to and from
mainland Ecuador, for just $2995! Choose from the 100-passenger
cruise ship Galapagos Legend, or the smaller vessels
Coral I and Coral II. All three ships follow
an exciting route which includes Isabela and Fernandina
Islands, two of the more diverse and remote islands
not included in many other itineraries. And if you had
another vessel in mind, just let us know – we can book
almost any reputable boat in the Galapagos. Contact us now

"I
thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Machu Picchu
absolutely astounded me! In the past I have always
traveled "on my own" with maps and guidebook in hand, but
for my first trip to South America decided a tour might be
wise. A very fortunate decision! With the
well-organized itinerary and wonderful guides a one week
visit was filled to the brim with fascinating sites and in
depth educational opportunities. Many thanks to
Marcello in Lima, and especially to Rene! I am back at
work but memories of mountains and clouds make me smile all
day long."

"It was a
great pleasure working with Doug Newton and Southern Crossings on
our National Geographic family travel TV series ‘Are We There
Yet?’. Doug showed a great flair for coming up with fun things for
kids to do at Machu Picchu, and put a lot of thought and time into
working with our specific needs. He was reliable, organized and thorough, plus he was so friendly and calm that he was a pleasure to
work with! Thanks again, Doug!"
